A Radis Community Care manager who was described by one of her service users as ‘unfailingly cheerful and optimistic’ throughout the Coronavirus pandemic, has won a Mayor of Winchester Community Award.

Chita Sunggay who is manager at Chesil Lodge extra care scheme in Winchester which offers care and support in retirement accommodation for older people, was nominated for the award by resident Peter Eagling who said: “Because of staff shortages and resident illness, it has been a difficult time for the provision of care and she has been unfailingly cheerful and optimistic and has worked countless hours of overtime. We are lucky to have her.”

Chesil Lodge offers 52 flats for Council tenants and private owners aged over 55 and has a variety of communal facilities including a restaurant, lounge, hairdresser, activity rooms, laundry and outdoor space. Meanwhile, Radis Community Care provides an on-site care team who offer residents support with daily activities such as washing and dressing, shopping and preparing meals.

Chita received news of her award in a letter from Councillor Patrick Cunningham, Mayor of Winchester which read: “This year our nominations, naturally, feature many people who have stepped up to help and support during the pandemic, extraordinary acts of selflessness during a time which has been most challenging for everyone. It has been truly heart-warming and reinforces the caring, neighbourly spirit that we are lucky to have across our district – this last year has certainly brought out the very best in so many people.”

As well as the letter, Chita received a certificate and pin. Chita said: “I am surprised and honoured to be recognised for this award. To be nominated by one of our service users makes me particularly proud. Myself and the rest of my team work so hard to make sure residents of Chesil Lodge feel cared for and supported and this has been more important than ever for people this year. I am pleased that we have still made a positive difference to people’s lives despite the challenging circumstances. A huge thank you to my team for all their support and to Peter for his nomination.”
