Weddings are one of life’s most important milestones. For the Godfrey family in Peterborough, that moment very nearly wasn’t possible. But thanks to the determination of her son, the support of hospital staff, and the efforts of our Radis team, Truly Godfrey was able to attend her son’s wedding against all the odds.

In September, while on holiday in Dorset, Truly suffered a stroke that left her seriously unwell and far from home. As her son Martin’s wedding day approached at the beginning of November, it seemed increasingly unlikely that she would be well enough to travel, let alone attend the ceremony.

Against expectations, Truly was transferred to Peterborough City Hospital in October, bringing the possibility of her attending the wedding within reach, but only if safe support could be arranged quickly.

Martin contacted Radis Community Care to see whether anything could be done. Our team moved swiftly to explore all options, working closely with the family to find a safe and person-centred way for Truly to be part of the day.

On the wedding morning, Senior Field Care Supervisor Michelle Matthews provided hands-on support, helping Truly dress, prepare, and travel safely to Peterborough Register Office. Thanks to Michelle’s professionalism and care, Truly was able to witness her son’s special moment.

The family were incredibly grateful for the support, sharing how much it meant to have Truly with them on a day they feared she would miss.

Getta Sutton, Service Development Lead, said: “This is a great example of a mixed-model of care, and one we plan to repeat in the future.”

This wouldn’t have been possible without the efforts of both Michelle and Julia Williams, Service Manager at Eden Place, Outreach Community Services and Park View, who helped make the arrangements happen at short notice.

Their teamwork is a wonderful example of how flexible, responsive care can transform important moments in people’s lives, and how Radis staff go above and beyond to make a difference.
