Jack’s story

At Cherry Orchard Extra Care Housing scheme, nursery children from the local first school visit residents every week and take part in activities together.

When resident Jack took part in the activities for the first time, he sat with one of the children, drawing a picture together. His daughter came in to find him and as she stood by the door watching her dad she started to cry.

She later said: “I’m so happy we have our dad back,” and went on to explain Jack’s last 18 unhappy months before he moved into Cherry Orchard, not wanting to dress, go out or socialise, and as his health began to decline he had become low and angry with life.

Jack now regularly attends the seated exercise class on a Tuesday, entertainment afternoon on a Wednesday and the coffee morning on Thursdays. He is a regular in the café now and has made friends.

Jack used to love gardening so the care team are arranging for some raised beds to be installed in the garden – another project that residents could work on with the children.

What is Extra Care Housing?

Extra Care Housing offers you the opportunity to live independently in your own home with access to as much support as you need to remain safe and well.

These purpose-built Extra Care Housing schemes typically offer individuals or couples, spacious apartments or bungalows to rent or buy, with superb communal areas and facilities such as on-site shops, hairdressers, restaurants, regular activities and events for you to enjoy with a community of like-minded residents.

Radis has been at the forefront of providing care and support within Extra Care Housing since 2010. We now provide such services in dozens of Extra Care Housing developments across England and Wales for people who have a range of care needs, including older people, those with long term health conditions and physical or learning disabilities.

Supporting older people

These housing schemes are primarily for older people over 55 years. They’re not just for people with existing care needs, but anyone in their older years who wants to live in a safe, vibrant environment with people in similar circumstances, but still in their own home with their own front door.

As and when your care needs change over time, so too can your level of care and support. This means you can remain independent and have peace of mind that our dedicated carers are on hand to provide you with the care you need.

Our ethos of extra care is a ‘home for life’ so that you can have support that adapts around you, within a safe physical environment that allows you to live there as you age and your needs become greater, without having to find new housing or move into residential care.

24/7 staff onsite care team

In each scheme we employ a staff team who are based on site. They are there 24/7, with someone on duty at all times, able to respond to anyone who needs help even unexpected or emergency support 24/7, even if you don’t have regular care.

Meeting your care and support needs

Our carers provide personal care and support services tailored to give you as much or as little help as you need with tasks such as:

• 24-hour emergency support if needed, even if you don’t have regular care
• All aspects of your personal care, such as washing, dressing, using the toilet and moving around safely.
• Help with taking your medicines
• Practical support with housework, shopping, pet care and preparing meals
• Moving around the extra care scheme to access facilities, take part in activities and events, meet friends or pursue hobbies
• Checking in on you to make sure you’re OK
• Support in communal areas and wider community

We provide wider support around the building too, for example helping you move around the scheme, take part in activities, access the restaurant or even offsite support in the local area for example visiting places of worship.

We work closely with the housing provider and other services to make sure you have all your needs met.

Not just a care service

In many locations Radis is also responsible for other services, such as organising activities, managing the restaurant/café, health and wellbeing advice and even general housing management.
